GINGHAM FELTED JACKET & SKIRT
Inspired by the classic Southern gingham pattern, the “Felted Gingham Jacket” and the “Felted and Embroidered Gingham Skirt” were made from fiber local to North Carolina.
The gingham jacket is hand-felted, made from various roving blends sourced from Avillon Farm in Efland, North Carolina (my home state). The roving was first hand-dyed red with acid dye before being wet felted with the naturally colored roving. Once felted together, the material was then machine felted and pierced with hundreds of needles to strengthen the material. The textile was then hand felted before being cut and sewn together.
Along the interior edges of the jacket is a cotton gingham bias binding. The bottom hem of the jacket is left in its natural state.
The same initial process occurs for the skirt. Once the exterior panels of the skirt were sewn together, I embroidered the red segments of the gingham print with chain stitching for additional texture.
The interior of the skirt includes a boned crinoline that is concealed by a cotton gingham lining and a felted facing. The center back of the skirt features a red detachable zipper.
